Replacing Meals, Losing Weight - 23 Apr 2013

Losing weight can be a long process, and if you go about it the wrong way, it won’t be a fun one either. Too many people spend their days starving themselves, missing meals full of nutritional elements absolutely essential to crafting a strong and healthy metabolism. Being able to experience genuine gains requires genuine dedication, that much is certain, but there are plenty alternatives to simply cutting out meals and leaving nothing to sustain yourself.

Replacing meals is a far healthier solution. There are plenty of healthy, filling and low fat meal replacements to help you smash those weight loss goals without messing up your delicate metabolism in the process.

SupaShape take a positive approach. They offer Diet Whey Meal Replacement drinks, perfect for mixing up yourself while keeping high protein levels. Alternatively, they’ve got a wide range of replacement meals, from soup and pancakes to smoothies and jelly.

From CarbWatchers we’ve got meal replacement shakes again, though these come in handily portable sachet form. With maximum protein and minimum carbs & calories, just pack up a few sachets, mix one into 360ml of ice cold water and you’ll be maintaining a good shape in no time at all.

Lean Body Wholefood meal replacement shakes are suited for slow energy release throughout the day. They boast a 50/30/20 split of protein, carbs and healthy fats, keeping you feeling full and energised for hours after the fact.

Be sure to browse the store, there’s more than enough to get excited about. If you ever have any questions and queries, though, don’t hesitate to call us and we’ll help set something up.

Protein for Vegetarians - 19 Apr 2013

When you’re embarking on a new fitness programme it’s likely to be for one of two reasons. Either you’re looking to lower your body fat and shave off a good few pounds, tone up and build some muscle, or likely a mixture of these two. But whatever you’re ultimately hoping to achieve, protein is going to be a big part of it.

Protein is essential for muscle growth in the long term, and recovery after a workout. Good quality protein can be found in a variety of sources, though in a regularly balanced diet this tends to come from animal meat. As part of a low-calorie diet this can be troublesome, and for vegetarians it’s completely unmanageable. Fortunately, there are more than enough high quality vegetarian protein powders available on our online store for you to try out now.

There are a good few varieties on display from various sellers, including Soy Protein Isolate and HumaPro Drink, a unique protein matrix for human enzymic conversion.

But what you’ll be most interested in is likely Whey Protein. Whey is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey, which is a by-product of cheese production. It’s one of the densest protein supplements you can get your hands on, meat-free, and most varieties are extremely low in carbohydrates, meaning the calories you ingest are for your muscles, nothing else.

With brands like PhD, Reflex and Nutrisport all offering high quality whey protein solutions there’s no excuse for not picking up the protein you need, regardless of your personal diet.

Taking your Diet on the Go - 18 Apr 2013

Committing to a fitness regime can be difficult. When you’ve been sticking to a programme for years it does get easier, becoming increasingly ingrained as a constant part of your lifestyle. But no matter what stage you’re currently at, there’s always good reason to provide yourself with a little extra help when it comes to sticking with a strict nutritional guideline.

We’re personally big fans of meal bags. Where the vast majority of our products are nutritional, these are more a matter of convenience and functionality. They’re designed to let you tightly pack everything you need for your nutritional plan in one place.

Each bag contains space for drinks and protein shakers, along with padded compartments for tablets, capsules and protein bars. Depending on the variant you pick, there’s room for either three of five vacuum sealed tubs to contain meals you’ve already prepared. The only difference between the two versions is the space for these tubs.

They’re fashionable enough, coming in black, silver and red/silver, and provide everything you need to get you through the day. You can pack meals and supplements for work, home, and the gym without having to worry about loose items getting lost in the car or opening.

Meal bags are an incredibly convenient way of bringing your diet along with you, leaving no excuse to grab something from the shop on lunch, or the way home. Remember, if you have any questions or queries feel free to contact us, and we’ll have someone happy to help.

Supplements for Lactose Intolerance - 16 Apr 2013

Lactose intolerance is certainly one of the most frustrating medical conditions to suffer from. A huge proportion of common food products feature some form of dairy as a matter of course, and it can quickly get disheartening when certain foods are shut off to you.

Even in the field of supplements you’re limited. Many proteins feature a degree of lactose, usually around 0.1g per 1g of protein. People with only minor lactose intolerance may be able to manage, though it’s common for individuals to suffer from gas, abdominal pain and even diarrhoea if they make insensible nutritional choices.

This is why we’re certain to offer a range of excellent Lactose-free protein supplements to support any customers who’ve had difficulties with lactose in the past. MuscleMeds’ Carnivor powder is one of the bigger names, being the first to consist entirely of bioengineered beef protein isolate. It’s 350% more concentrated than steak, and even more so than the whey isolates you’re seeking to avoid. Pro-10 supply us with a high quality Soy Protein Isolate, consisting of 90% protein to the pack. It’s slower to digest than whey, making it ideal as a night supplement, and importantly skips out on troublesome lactose.

Finally, you might want to consider Platinum HydroWhey. While whey based, the hydrolysing process removes lactose from the mix, creating an especially pure product without excess fat and cholesterol to boot.

Any of these are great products, and feel free to take a look through our listings to see what’s on offer. Remember, if you’re one of the many whey users suffering from gastronomic distress, it might be time to switch over to a lactose-free product.

Simple Snacks – High Protein - 11 Apr 2013

There’s not really much harm to be had by having more protein. Gym goers optimise their diets to maximise their protein intake and better feed their muscles. If you’re only just starting out it’s actually pretty common to eat far less protein than you need, and suffering from muscle atrophy isn’t a risk you particularly want to take.

Usually we recommend good quality supplements, but we see a lot of questions from individuals looking for something a little more appetising than raw protein powder, yet still want to stick to their strict, calorie controlled diet. If this sounds like you, then you might want to take a look at SupaShape, part of our range of weight loss food.

The range now includes a good variety of meals to take you through the entire day, even with a few snacks thrown in for good measure. The high protein breakfast will net you 20g of protein for a 214kcal banana and toffee smoothie, with 30g of carbohydrates to start your day off. For later in the day there’s high protein instant tomato soup, standing at 17g of protein for only 185kcal. You can round of the day with Jelly Lean, with one serving containing only two calories, and fortified with a fat burning stimulant complex.

There’s also high protein pancake mix, and high protein cookies to boot. Whatever you’re looking for, chances are you’ll be able to find an incredibly high protein substitute for at least a few of your standard meals, and that’s not to be sniffed at.

As ever, feel free to contact us with any questions and queries, we’ve always got a team member on hand waiting to help.

Tips for Marathon Season - 26 Mar 2013

A marathon is a huge commitment. While the event itself might only last a single day, it’s common to spend weeks and months getting your body into excellent shape, and marathons have pretty hefty physical requirements of their participants.

Now, energy drinks quickly become an important part of any runner’s training scheme. There’s a lot of great products for hydrating and energy replenishment, and it’s fairly common to develop a favourite early on. Even if it weighs a little more, keeping your drinks with you as you race can offer much-needed support. Keeping a platypus on your back, or smaller bottles on a  holster belt are often balance-friendly ways to keep your hydration handy.

But nutrition isn’t limited to the race itself, it’s important to prepare your body in advance. Eating about 40-50 grams of carbohydrates is often recommended around an hour before any long run, to help you keep muscles fuelled and un-fatigued throughout the event. This usually amounts to a couple of bread slices, or half a bagel, so be sure to pack a small but healthy lunch before you set off.

Since we’re talking about nutrition, remember to eat some kind of snack when you cross the finish line. This helps immensely with helping your muscles to recover after an intensively long run. Since you have half a bagel left over, you might as well eat that now.

It’s important not to get bogged down in advice. If you’re training hard and steadily increasing your mileage, then just keep at it. But remember there are tips which can genuinely help you on the day.

Weight-Gain Tips - 26 Mar 2013

We talk a lot about weight-loss here, since that’s what a lot of our customers are interested in, particularly at the start of the year. But there are a lot of people looking to pack on the pounds with muscle, and make progress with a weight-gain programme.

Obviously, a good degree of exercise is a must, though we’ll mainly be discussing protein and nutrition here. As a baseline though, just work on heavier weights performing less reps. Ideally, you should be physically capable to perform 8-10 reps and no more. After three minutes rest do another set. Being able to do a lot of reps won’t gain you muscle mass, so remember to stick by your limits.

In terms of nutrition, protein is naturally important. For muscle maintenance we usually recommend between 0.8-1.2g of protein per kg of lean body weight, that’s total body mass minus your body fat percentage. If you’re looking to gain you’ll want to up this ratio to about 1.8g per kg of body weight. Some will recommend substantially higher amounts, but the benefits begin to tail off after 2.2g, and you may not even need that.

Working on high-weight reps with a good amount of protein is an excellent way to gain mass. Remember not to cut back on your calories, though. As your weight increases your BMR will shoot up, and there’s no way to build muscle if you simply haven’t given your body enough fuel to do so.

What Loses Weight - Cardio or Weights? - 22 Mar 2013

It’s not uncommon to see people asking about this topic, since there’s a lot of conflicting information out there to process. People are seeking the most efficient methods of losing weight quickly, and disagreement over cardio and strength is rife.

Firstly, it depends how you’re judging weight loss. Muscle is three times denser than fat, on average, so if you build up a good amount of strength on the machines you’re likely to get a lot smaller and toned, just not necessarily lighter.

For pure calorie burn, the factor against we usually measure weight loss, cardio is unmatched, allowing you to burn off hundreds of calories in a relatively small amount of time. Lifting weights is substantially less efficient for calorie burn, in comparision.

The difference is that since it’s so much heavier than fat, muscle takes a lot more calories to maintain than fat, and having a lot of muscle will boost your metabolic rate, increasing the number of calories you burn naturally in the day. Weightlifters are often on 5,000 calorie diets, and that’s just making sure they don’t lose weight by accident.

Overall, it’s best to build up a regime which focuses on both. Cardio will burn a good amount of calories, while also getting your entire body active. Following with weights will burn more calories than starting with them, while helping to cultivate the muscle mass allowing long-term fitness.

Why Do We Get Fat? - 20 Mar 2013

This is an odd question. It’s not odd because it’s unreasonable, or even because it doesn’t have a satisfying answer. In fact, it has an exceedingly simple answer which anyone can understand. What makes it odd is just how often it gets ask, and how many problems people have solving it.

We get fat because we eat too much and exercise too little.

Unfortunately, it really isn’t any more complicated than that. Fat is basically just stored energy, ready to be used at a later date when that excess turns into an energy deficiency. If you put 3000 calories of energy into your body and only take 2000 out through exercise and body mass, 1000 calories will turn into fat. It’s that simple. For every 3,500 extra calories stored in your body you’ll create one pound of mass.

This could be muscle, quite often it’ll be fat instead. From here things get more complicated than simple energy use, moving into why we generate fat specifically. It’s partially a matter of nutrition, partially exercise.

Firstly, it’s important to eat protein. If you’re not keeping it to healthy levels your body will burn muscle and build fat. Eating less fatty products will in turn encourage less of that mass to occur as fat.
Simply cutting down on excess energy through exercise and dieting will always lose weight, so long as you’re judging your BMR correctly. But beyond this, it’s important to note whether your diet is encouraging fat, regardless of weight.

Why Can’t I Lose Weight? - 20 Mar 2013

The weight loss industry is immense, and we always see a lot of custom from individuals looking to better assess their diets and fitness regime to achieve certain weight loss goals. Unfortunately, there are often more factors at play than simply food and running, and a lot of people find themselves inexplicably unable to keep off the pounds.

Firstly, be sure you’re getting enough sleep. A study found individuals getting by on five hours or less a night had substantially slowed metabolisms, meaning they’d need to cut out even more calories to lose weight. With work, gym and family sleep can seem unimportant, but missing it is a huge setback.

In a similar vein, sedentary lifestyles can have a terrible effect, even if you’re visiting the gym every day! While you might be working towards a great calorie burn at night, your body will still be slipping into a slower metabolism thanks to weeks spent sitting around, doing nothing for 99% of the day. If you have a desk job at least try to get up and walk around a few times a day, or fidget your legs. You could burn hundreds more calories in a day.

And finally, a lot of people aren’t paying enough attention to their nutrients. If you cut the calories you will lose weight, but nutrients determines where. A lot of people try to combine a detox with intensive fitness programmes, but if you’re not consuming enough protein you’ll be burning muscle, not fat. This might cut weight, but you’ll be less toned, less capable to exercise, and not get much smaller.
Keep track of these three factors, and make sure none of them are holding you back.

At Last, Lance Armstrong Tells the Truth… - 25 Jan 2013

So, Lance Armstrong has finally revealed everything we’ve all known for a long time. He has been stripped of all of his winning results and titles from 1998 to 2005 as it’s been confirmed that he has been guilty of blood doping and using and distributing performance enhancing drugs.

Blood doping involves boosting the number of red blood cells in the bloodstream, enhancing athletic performance. As blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles, a higher concentration in the blood of an athlete increases their endurance and maximises energy, aerobic capacity and strength.

There are ways you can do this without compromising your career and your sport. Something as simple as wearing compression sportswear will create many benefits. For example, the fitted nature of compression sportswear helps to warm the muscles in the legs in particular. Therefore, muscle strain and fatigue of the body are prevented and the body becomes more enhanced and energised, naturally. Take a look at our range of compression sportswear on our website. If you’ve got your doubts that something as simple as what you wear can help you, compression sportswear has been scientifically proven to enhance athletic performance and give you the support you need when you’re under competitive pressure. We’ve reduced our range of compression sportswear in price to make them that bit easier for you to purchase – We want to emphasise the importance of what you wear while you’re practicing and competing.

You can also maximise your body’s capacity and energy by leading a healthy lifestyle and in taking a balanced diet. You could also check out our range of health bars on our website. Get your energy boost by being good to your body and enhancing your wellbeing as well as your performance levels.

Boost Performance and Recovery with Compression Gear - 13 Dec 2012

There’s been plenty of debate over the effect compression clothing has on performance. The technology, made of a nylon-spandex blend to allow for stretching while maintaining structure, has been used in the medical community for some time. The mechanical pressure the clothing exerts on the body works to support underlying tissue, increasing blood circulation.

Improved circulation is a proven feature. In the fitness industry this means sped up muscle recovery after an intense exercise session. Some cyclists and marathon runners have reported a performance boost as high as 5%, though there’s little concrete evidence as yet. In well trained athletes the circulatory effects are less significant, and performance boosts may be a mental placebo effect of expecting better results while wearing compression clothing.

Nevertheless, there are definite benefits. A compression outfit will help to warm up faster, decreasing the eventual build-up of lactic acid, and muscle fatigue is severely reduced.

So if you’re looking to experiment yourself with increasing performance, or just suffer commonly from muscle fatigue, our range of compression clothing might be the perfect choice to help you find that extra boost. Take a look through the stock and see what interests you, and keep researching to decide whether your training programme could benefit.

Taking Care of your Muscles and Joints - 13 Dec 2012

Muscle inflammation and pain can be a frustrating experience. If you’re engaging in high-intensity training then it’s a necessary discomfort to ensure improved tissue strength in the future. Just because ‘No pain, no gain’ is a fact of life doesn't mean there aren't products to limit the pain sides of things. At times the training ache can be a pleasant indication that you’ve pushed yourself, but the moment it begins to bother you for extended periods it’s time to keep it under control.

Muscle Finesse can provide you with a range of Joint & Muscle Care products to help you reduce pain and inflammation throughout every stage of your workout. Pre-training we recommend a Nuflex Warming Gel or spray. It creates a warming sensation as circulation increases, while further limiting build-up of lactic acid. Supplements UK - 08 Oct 2012

Sports are a brilliant hobby to have. It doesn't matter if you’re jogging for fun or weight lifting for a competition. Sports are a great way to ensure that you stay healthy and fit and lead an active life. This will have a great impact on those around you, and may even spark some of your friends and family into getting out and taking up a sport themselves in order to lose weight or simply be a lot healthier.

When competing professionally, or attempting to raise yourself to the professional level of sporting, you need to begin to alter the way you eat in order to work with your sport. Anyone that wants to add muscle needs to eat a lot more protein, and the best way to do this is by using protein powders from providers of supplements such as Muscle Finesse.

Supplements are a great way to ensure your body is getting everything it needs whilst not having to fill it up with extra unnecessary vitamins and minerals through your meals. Supplements are also easier for your body to harness, meaning that a protein shake can give you the protein you need as you need it. If you’re getting your protein through chicken you need to wait between finishing your sport and the meal, before you even eat the food, and even then your body needs to digest it before the protein can be distributed to your muscles.

Many people might not like the idea of using supplements in order to gain or lose weight or add muscle however, it is almost always necessary if you want to start competing professionally in your sport.

Supplements aren’t something that you can simply pick up and begin to take alongside your sports training. If you’re going to take them you should seek the advice of a professional who can advise you on which supplements you need to be taking for your specific goals.
